This will be the fifth G8 Religious Leaders Summit, this year to include representatives from Africa, Asia and Latin America as well as G8 and G20 countries. The purpose of the meeting is to collaborate on a unified message from religious communities to government leaders attending the G8/G20 meetings in Huntsville and Toronto from June 25 to 28.

The University of Winnipeg is the site for this year’s event, generously provided by the University and its President, Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, former Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs. Over the past months, Baha’i representatives have been active members of the Steering Committee, the Statement Writing Committee and the local organizing committee in Winnipeg. There will be an official Baha’i delegate among the religious leaders and Baha’i representatives attending as international observers from France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The statement under consideration by the Religious Leaders has been drafted and is available at http://www.faithchallengeg8.com/ along with commentaries from 16 religious communities and organizations, including one from the Baha’i Community of Canada.

Happy Ridvan!!

Check the calendar for celebration dates and times.

From an article on www.bahai.us

From April 21 to May 2, Baha'is observe the Festival of Ridvan. This most holy day commemorates the anniversary of Baha'u'llah's declaration in 1863 that He was the Promised One of all earlier religions.

Baha'u'llah's declaration that He was "Him Whom God shall make manifest" and a Manifestation of God marks the beginning of the Baha'i Faith.

Ridvan (Rizwahn) was a bittersweet time, as Baha'u'llah was soon to be exiled to Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey). This was the latest in His series of exiles by the Persian government, which considered Him to be a heretic.

Baha'u'llah spent 12 days in a garden in Baghdad visiting with His followers. His followers named the garden Ridvan, which means "Paradise" or "good pleasure" in Arabic. The exact circumstances of the Declaration are not known. According to Shoghi Effendi, Guardian of the Faith: “The fragmentary description left to posterity by His chronicler Nabil is one of the very few authentic records we possess of the memorable days He spent in that garden. “Every day,” Nabil has related, “ere the hour of dawn, the gardeners would pick the roses which lined the four avenues of the garden, and would pile them in the center of the floor of His blessed tent. So great would be the heap that when His companions gathered to drink their morning tea in His presence, they would be unable to see each other across it. All these roses Baha’u’llah would, with His own hands, entrust to those whom He dismissed from His presence every morning to be delivered, on His behalf, to His Arab and Persian friends in the city.”

Baha'u'llah called Ridvan the Most Great Festival and the King of Festivals. He said:
Call ye to mind, O people, the bounty which God hath conferred upon you. Ye were sunk in slumber, and lo! He aroused you by the reviving breezes of His Revelation, and made known unto you His manifest and undeviating Path.

When He entered the garden, Baha'u'llah proclaimed the Festival of Ridvan and made three announcements:
- He forbade His followers to fight to advance or defend the Faith (religious war had been permitted under past religions).

- He declared there would not be another prophet for another 1,000 years.

- He proclaimed that all the names of God were inherent in all things at that moment.

Baha'is suspend work on the holiest days of Ridvan-the first (April 21), ninth (April 29) and twelfth (May 2). These mark the day of Baha'u'llah's arrival in the garden, the arrival of His family and the group's departure for Constantinople.

Throughout Ridvan, Baha'is gather for devotions and attend social gatherings.

Court date for Iranian Baha'i leaders is 12 April

See more information at http://news.bahai.org/

New Members of UHJ

Two new members elected to Universal House of Justice
    20 March 2010

HAIFA, Israel — The Universal House of Justice has announced the results of a by-election for two of its nine members.

The new members are Stephen Birkland and Stephen Hall, elected in balloting in which members of national Baha'i governing bodies around the world serve as electors. Alex O’Loughlin, one of the stars of the show, spoke about one encounter he observed researching his role by shadowing a transplant surgeon. “I sat and watched him talk to [the patient]. “ O’Loughlin remarked . " He said, ‘What would you do if I could give you another five years of life?,’ and she said, ‘Take walks. Go to the lake. I'd tend to my vegetable garden. I'd have dinner with my kids.’ This was a person like you and like me, and all of us who just want to live life and be with the people they love and do the things that bring them joy.”

The Baha’i Faith has no prohibition against donating or receiving organs. The Universal House of Justice, the international administrative body of the Baha’i Faith, has stated “We have not come across anything specific in the Writings on transplants of hearts and other organs or regarding the time of death, and the Universal House of Justice does not wish to make any statements on these points at this time." (Compilations, Lights of Guidance, p. 290)

Further Shoghi Effendi , Baha’u’llah’s great grandson and leader of the Baha’i Faith 1922-1957, responded “There is nothing in the teachings which would forbid a Bahá'í to bequeath his eyes to another person or for a Hospital; on the contrary it seems a noble thing to do.” (letter dated September 6th 1946, Compilations, The Compilation of Compilations vol. I, p. 481)

Acts of justice, love and compassion define what it means to be a person of faith. Every human life is precious and is part of the human community that bestows and protects the life of its members. When life is understood to be a gift, we can give it to others through organ and tissue donation. By becoming an organ donor, one person can benefit the lives of eight other people.

To become an organ donor in Minnesota, You can sign up to extend the gift of life by joining Donate Life Minnesota (www.donatelifemn.org), an online organ and tissue donor Registry. You can also mark your intentions on your driver's license or state ID card. Both options are legal authorization for donation and will ensure that your wish is fulfilled. Talk with your family about your decision so they can be prepared to support and honor your wishes.

By the righteousness of the Lord! Ye were created to show love one to another… Take pride not in love for yourselves but in love for your fellow-creatures (Baha'u'llah, Tablets of Baha'u'llah, p. 138)

Kevin Locke wins Record of the Year

We are very happy to share with you that fellow Baha'i Kevin Locke won the 2009 Record of the Year for his latest recording, Earth Gift, at the 11th Annual Native American Music Awards, the music industry's largest organization for Native American music initiatives and expression.

Thank you for your support of Kevin and his music. type='text'>Baha'i Encyclopedia Project news

The Bahá’í Encyclopedia Project achieves a major milestone today, April 9, 2009, with the launching of a website featuring a gradually expanding selection of articles for the study of the Bahá’í Faith: http://www.bahai-encyclopedia-project.org/. The articles cover a range of topics in the categories of history, biography, teachings and laws, administration and institutions. All the articles bring together information from a variety of sources, many of which can be found only in research libraries and archives. The historical and biographical entries, in particular, include much material that has never been published or has not been available until now in English. Every attempt has been made, within the limits of available resources, to present the articles in an attractive and user-friendly format and to make it possible to update and improve them over time.
Excitement over this achievement is tempered, however, by the circumstances in which it takes place. Since the inception of the Encyclopedia Project in 1984, the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of the United States has provided unfailing encouragement and financial support. In late 2008, however, cost considerations resulting from the world economic crisis led the National Assembly to seek ways to reorganize the project in order to maintain momentum in its online publishing while reducing expenditures. The Encyclopedia Editorial Board was released from service, and the Encyclopedia Project's two-person staff was immediately halved. After a period of several months spent on preparations for launching the website, the coordinating editor's tenure as a full-time staff member also ended. The project is currently being restructured on the basis of volunteer service and earmarked contributions to support part-time editorial work and website maintenance and development, as resources permit.

The Serious Side of Dwight Schrute

Oprah Winfrey recently had a conversation with Rainn Wilson, actor on the show "The Office", on her radio show. In this classic tale, the birds of the world are gathered together by their leader, the hoopoe, and told of a legendary King. Inspired by the hoopoe’s tales, the birds take flight on a pilgrimage to find their celebrated King, but the dangers and hardships encountered on the journey cause many in the flock to abandon their search. In the end, the small number that survive realize they have completed a spiritual trek to self-discovery…. The King they sought was within themselves all along.

Featuring Heidi Berg, Beverly Cottman, Sonal Agarwal Gerten, Katie Herron, Masanari Kawahara, Kaori Kenmotsu, Alberto Panelli, Gregory Singfield, Harry Waters Jr., and Kevin Whitby.

Post-performance discussions following all Friday and Saturday shows.

Better than Ocean

Most technically saavy Baha'is are familiar with the tool called Ocean which is a searchable library of Holy Writings from all the major religions.

There's another new tool that has advantages over Ocean.
